Department of East Asian Languages and Lits

Welcome

Welcome back, everyone! The Fall 08 school term has begun with a new addition to our departmental personnel. We have a new professor of Chinese language and literature, Prof. Li Jin. Our teaching assistants, Ms. Ye Yuan from China and Ms. Keiko Ueda from Japan have returned to spend a second year with us.

2nd row--Beedle Hinely (Admin Asst), Keiko Ueda (TA), Professor Li Jin and Ye Yuan (Instructor)

Step through the door of the Red House and experience a whole new world. This is your gateway to East Asia. Learn with all five senses: hear spoken Chinese and Japanese in and around the department, in our smart classrooms view places and things you have never seen before, smell and taste an Asian dish being prepared and discussed in the kitchen, feel a brush in your hand as you pen characters for class. We can help satisfy your intellectual curiosity and stretch your academic muscle.

You can participate in learning about these fascinating cultures at W&L and abroad. For information about university events, see our CURRENT Department Events and Cultural Events Photo Gallery. Your undergraduate years offer you the very best time for studying abroad. Recommended programs are listed at Study Abroad in China and Japan.

Where is the Dept. of EALL?

We are located in a quaint Victorian house known by all at W&L as the “Red House.” On the campus map we are listed as #17 East Asian Language Center:

Is there a language placement test for Chinese and Japanese?
If you have previous experience in Chinese or Japanese, please email the department head for an appointment. You will be directed to a faculty member who can best help you select a suitable course of study, based on your skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. There is no "formal" test as we are able to assess your abilities with a number of exercises. We want you to be in a stimulating class that is appropriate to your level.

"America has much to offer Asia and Asia has much to offer the American people. But we cannot build an enduring and positive relationship on a foundation of ignorance. If all that our children know about Asia is that Play Station Two is built in Japan, panda bears come from China, and Jackie Chan makes movies in Hong Kong, then we have not prepared our children for the coming times. The economic, political and cultural forces at work in Asia right now will have a profound impact on America's future in the 21st Century.

The United States has been a Pacific power for over a century because we have been willing to defend democracy and encourage free trade. If we wish to encourage democracy and human rights in the future we will only succeed if we join our many friends across the Pacific in strengthening the economic, cultural and educational links that bind us together. Building those links begins in the American classroom."

- Richard Riley, Former U.S. Secretary of Education
