Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program

Welcome

At the turn of the twentieth century, the diplomat and scholar Henry Adams set out to explain to his fellow Americans what the massive island fortress monastery of Mont St. Michel meant to its 11th-century Norman builders. To do this, he turned to literature, warfare, theology, patterns of migration, and manor holdings.

Like Adams, students in Washington and Lee's Medieval and Renaissance Studies major approach European culture in an interdisciplinary way. They study materials from many disciplines, examining them from different perspectives using diverse methods. Courses offered in traditional fields of study—like art history, religion, history, musicology, literary studies, philosophy, political theory, economics, and even astronomy—are combined to form a comprehensive program whereby an entire culture can be encountered on a variety of levels.

The interdisciplinary major in Medieval and Renaissance Studies was approved by the Committee on Courses and Degrees at their December 1994 meeting, and the program has been a part of W&L's curriculum since 1995. The program offers over sixty courses representing a wide range of academic disciplines and organized into four broad catergories.

Students concentrate their studies in one or two fields, but take courses in other areas as well, thus allowing them to receive a well-rounded and broadly-based understanding of a profoundly complex period. Among these courses are Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Shakespeare (English), The Italian Renaissance and the History of the British Isles to 1688 (History), Medieval Art in Italy and Northern Renaissance Art (Art), Classical Political Thought (Politics), Early Christian Thought and Islam (Religion), Medieval and Renaissance Prose Fiction (Spanish), and German Medieval and Renaissance Literature.
