This summer, Caitlin Clark '07, will be travelling to Beijing to participate in CET's Beijing Chinese Studies Program.  Along with a few hours of language class a week, she will also be taking elective courses focusing on Chinese culture and current issues.

Alex Gould ’08, who spent most of 2006 abroad (in Africa, the South Pacific, and Asia), studied at the prestigious National Taiwan Normal University for four months in the fall.  Having already spent a summer in China, he enjoyed having an opportunity to learn about life on the other side of the Taiwan Strait and found the experience particularly rewarding because of his total immersion in the local culture.  From dealing directly with his landlord in Chinese to owning and maintaining his own vehicle, he found that language uptake occurred outside the classroom as much as it did within.  Having spent much of his free time exploring isolated stretches of coastline in the Northeast with his four surfboards, he says one of the most memorable aspects of the trip was introducing the sport of surfing to a people still quite unfamiliar with it and attempting to ease their fears while he chased typhoons around the country.  Read more about his experiences at www.extremelifestyle.blogspot.com or in his book Stoked on Life: In Pursuit of Adventure, Discovery, and the Endless Adrenaline Rush, available in summer ’07.  Gould is a Chinese and Philosophy double-major considering graduate school for comparative studies in Eastern and Western philosophy.
